Typography 

TYPOGRAPHY: In Level 3 Graphic Design, students explore the art and purpose of typography as a powerful design element. They learn how to select and pair typefaces, establish visual hierarchy, adjust spacing and alignment, and use typography to communicate ideas, emotions, and brand identity effectively. Through creative projects, students develop an understanding of how type influences readability, composition, and visual impact while strengthening their skills in layout, design principles, and professional graphic communication.  PHOTOSHOP / ILLUSTRATOR

Design Series 3

DESIGN SERIES: In Level 3 Graphic Design, students create a series of three related designs, such as book covers, posters, or other themed pieces, that demonstrate unity through typography, color, imagery, and composition. Students explored the importance of developing a cohesive visual identity by maintaining consistent design elements while allowing each piece to communicate its own unique message. This project strengthened their understanding of branding, visual hierarchy, layout, and the principles of consistency and design unity. PHOTOSHOP / ILLUSTRATOR

COMMERCIAL MESSAGING: Students designed a variety of print pieces, including greeting cards, invitations, signs, and posters, while applying the principles of effective visual communication. Students combined typography, color, imagery, and layout to create designs that were both visually appealing and purposeful for their intended audiences. Through these projects, students strengthened their skills in composition, branding, design hierarchy, and preparing professional-quality graphics for print and digital media. LOGO DESIGN

LOGO DESIGN: Students explore the role of logo design in creating strong and recognizable brand identity. They learn how to develop original logos using vector graphics while applying design principles such as simplicity, balance, color, typography, and scalability. Through the design process, students strengthen their skills in creative problem-solving, visual communication, and branding while producing professional-quality logos used in for a variety of print and digital media and for commercial and personal use. Business Card Design

BUSINESS CARD DESIGN: Students designed professional personal business cards that reflected their unique identity while applying the principles of effective visual communication. Students explored the importance of typography, color, layout, hierarchy, and branding to create designs that were both visually appealing and functional. This project strengthened their understanding of professional design standards and demonstrated how thoughtful design can create a strong, memorable first impression. PHOTOSHOP / ILLUSTRATOR

BOOK COVER MAKES & REMAKES

BOOK COVER REMAKES: In this Photoshop and Illustrator project, students explored how illustration styles and graphic design evolve over time by redesigning the cover and one interior page of a children's book for a contemporary audience. Using original digital illustrations, creative typography, and thoughtful layout, students modernized the book while preserving its story and purpose. This project strengthened their skills in illustration, typography, composition, and visual storytelling, while developing an understanding of audience-centered design and the role of design in keeping printed media fresh, engaging, and relevant. MAGAZINE DESIGN

MAGAZINE COVER DESIGN: In this Graphic Design project, students became magazine publishers by designing an original magazine cover—or reimagining an existing one—using Adobe Illustrator, with some students also incorporating Photoshop and InDesign to complete a professional two-page spread. Students developed original concepts, created or digitally illustrated cover artwork, designed engaging layouts, and produced original editorial content such as feature articles, reviews, or Top 10 lists. This project strengthened their skills in branding, typography, page layout, illustration, visual hierarchy, and editorial design while demonstrating how creative content and strong visual communication work together to capture an audience. Holiday Cards

ANNUAL HOLIDAY CARD DESIGN CHALLENGE: In this annual Holiday Card Design Challenge, students created original holiday cards for submission to the county-wide contest using Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Illustrator. Students explored a variety of creative approaches, including digital illustration, photo manipulation, mixed media, and expressive typography to communicate the spirit of the season through thoughtful design. This project strengthened their skills in visual communication, composition, color, and creative problem-solving while providing the opportunity to design for a real-world audience. Each year, between three and five student designs are selected to represent the county, recognizing outstanding creativity, craftsmanship, and professional-quality design. PHOTOSHOP / ILLUSTRATOR

BRANDING & PACKAGING: Students explore the complete branding process by developing logo identities and applying it across real-world design applications, including truck graphics and product packaging. Students consider how color, typography, imagery, and visual consistency work together to create a recognizable brand. Students strengthen their skills in Adobe Illustrator, brand development, layout, and professional presentation while learning how effective design communicates a company’s message and connects with its audience. The art of Web Design

WEB DESIGN: Students explore the principles of effective homepage design by creating visually engaging and user-friendly web pages. Students learn how layout, typography, color, imagery, navigation, and visual hierarchy work together to communicate a message and create a strong first impression. Through designing their own portfolio websites using Wix, students gained experience with digital design tools while developing skills in branding, organization, user experience, and creating professional online presentations that showcase their creative work.

School T-Shirt & Tote Bag Design

SCHOOL DESIGN: Students create original designs for school T-shirts and tote bags while exploring how artwork translates from the digital screen to real-world products. Students applied principles of typography, illustration, color, composition, and branding to develop designs that were visually appealing, meaningful, and suitable for production. This project strengthened their understanding of merchandise design, audience awareness, and creating graphics that communicate a message across different media. PHOTOSHOP / ILLUSTRATOR

Sketchbook Design

SKETCHBOOK DESIGN: In this Photoshop project, students designed original mixed media sketchbook covers that reflected their individual personalities, interests, and artistic style. Using a combination of digital illustration, photo manipulation, typography, textures, and layered compositions, students created expressive designs that prominently featured their names as part of the artwork. This project strengthened their skills in Photoshop, composition, creative expression, and visual communication while encouraging them to develop a unique artistic identity through digital media. Just Doodling Around

DOODLE ART: Photoshop, Illustrator, and drawing media project, students explored the creative possibilities of doodle-based design by transforming simple lines, shapes, and spontaneous ideas into highly developed works of art. Students created expressive compositions that combined representational imagery, abstract forms, patterns, and intricate illustrations while maintaining balance, harmony, and visual interest. This project encouraged creative exploration while strengthening skills in digital drawing, composition, line quality, color, and developing a unique personal style.  PHOTOSHOP

Mixed Media

MIXED MEDIA: In this Photoshop, Illustrator, and Drawing Media project, students combined traditional illustration with digital techniques to create original mixed media artwork. Students blended hand-drawn elements with digital painting, vector art, photo manipulation, layering, and other creative tools to develop unique visual compositions. This project strengthened their skills in digital illustration, composition, storytelling, and creative problem-solving while demonstrating how traditional and digital media can work together in professional design workflows. It's a Close-up

CLOSE-UP: In this project, students were asked to use their talents and digital skills to create an illustration of an object as seen through a microscope. Eyes are definitely the window to the soul.

Minimalist Graphics & Vector Illustrations

Sometimes simple graphics are all that's needed to convey an idea.  These designs can be used on websites, in advertising, and in presentations. Students create designs based on specific goals themes.

Concept Character Design

Digital illustrations often involve storytelling and characters. Students create illustrations that are both simple sketches and complex illustrations using digital tablets and Adobe software.

Super Hero / Comic Book Cover

What can be more fun than designing a super hero or comic book character?  Students will create illustrations in the form of a comic book cover, using text, full use of space and overlap to create a dynamic illustration.

Hidden World - Character & Fantasy

Students were asked to create two fantasy characters or the world in which their two characters would live. In addition they wrote stories about their worlds and the fantasy characters that live in those worlds.  Amazing creativity. 

Poetry & Illustration

POETRY & ILLUSTRATION: Students selected poems that had meaning to them and brought those poems to life visually.
